April 23, 2006Thrilling adventures in time and spaceOnce upon a time Doctor Who and Rose met Queen Victoria and they met a Werewolf and they ran away from it a lot but luckily Prince Albert had invented a laser gun so they killed the Werewolf the end. ...and many congratulations to the winner of Blue Peter's "write your own Doctor Who story" competition, Russell T. Davies from Wales - his prize is that he gets to be Executive Producer of Doctor Who and write more adventures like this every single week! Comments
I liked it, but I don't think the story was well served by being crammed into 45 minutes. Could have been really atmospheric as a two-parter. Posted by: James Casey at April 23, 2006 12:06 PMGot to love the Jamie reference, though. Surely? Posted by: James Casey at April 23, 2006 12:07 PMI'm sorry James, but...WHAT story? Would you have sat through another 45 minutes of running away from a non-specific alien werewolf creature and tediously obvious Queen Victoria jokes? Because there was precious little else in the episode. Perhaps a second episode would have allowed us to explore the characters of... oh. There weren't any. Yes, I liked the Jamie joke. Possibly the one redeeming feature of having a fanboy writing for the series rather than, like, a WRITER. Posted by: James Lark at April 23, 2006 12:39 PMWhat I mean is I think there was something there that could have provided us with better characters and plot and indeed action over two episodes. I couldn't stand the 'Are you amused?' stuff right from its first utterance. Posted by: James Casey at April 23, 2006 08:02 PMYes, but what I mean is, if a writer can't manage to get any character and plot into 45 minutes, I don't think they're going to do much better with twice as long. Especially Russell T Davies, who gave us a masterclass in how to waste two-part stories last series. Couldn't agree more about "are you amused" - in fact Rose Tyler full stop was completely unengaging. Can't wait to get a bit of Sarah Jane Smith next week...
